A Guide to Golf on the Algarve


Golfers who like to enjoy their sport as part of their holiday are driven more by the range of courses on offer in a particular destination, but having a favourable year-round climate is another major factor. The "wow factor" of a golf course will ensure memories of specific holes and views remain for years to come. The perfect climate and location for golf is year-round bright, sunny and mild weather throughout the year with a pleasant sea breeze to cool down the hotter summer days. Regions who get more than their fair share of sunny days to rain-drenched ones are clearly preferable.


Portugal`s Algarve region, just two to three hours from London, is fast becoming a top destination for golf holidays because of its warm climate and spectacular scenery along a fabulous coastline. Golfing here is most popular from late autumn to late spring due to the mild. <br> <br>


The San Lorenzo course at Quinta do Lago is rated Number 2 in Europe by Golf World. It`s par 72 18-hole course surrounded by pine-woods, lakes and lots of wildlife, and affords stunning views of the Ria Formosa nature reserve. Le Méridien Penina is the first resort course, laid over a former rice field, and provides a complete golfing getaway in one location, with three golf courses within its 360 acres, with an 18-hole Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course and two 9 holes. The Benamor golf course epitomises the Algarve with Atlantic views to the south and rolling hills and valleys in the north. A quaint church meets you at the last hole. Rated in the Top 10 Portuguese courses, the magnificent 18-hole, Par 72 Quinta da Ria golf course, set within the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, overlooks the mountains and the sea. Vale do Lobo is amongst the very best of Algarve golf courses, offering mountain scenery and ocean views. The 16th hole on its Royal Course is said to be the most photographed hole in Europe since two ravines need to be cleared to reach the green. Portugal's golf history is one of the oldest on mainland Europe-providing, the ancient origins of such games as kolven which the Dutch indulged in, and the rudimentary sport of Paganica which the Romans played with enthusiasm. Portugal completed its Golf Centenary in 1990.

It was legendary Henry Cotton who put the Algarve on the golf map. In the mid-sixties at Penina he designed the first proper grass course. It was the first of three he designed in the Algarve, a place he loved and made his home for almost 30 years.
 

During the 1970`s the 1980`s and on into the first half of the 1990`s, golf courses mushroomed all along Portugal`s south coast as it became increasingly attractive to vacationers & holidaymakers from northern Europe.

All the existing courses lie west of the regional capital, Faro, although a few projects have been planned for the eastern Algarve between Faro and the Spanish border.
All the courses are less than 15 km from the coast.

The terrain varies from the steep hillsides of Parque da Floresta to the near sea-level flatlands of Vilamoura III.

The recently opened course at Salgados which shares links style golf with Palmares.
The terrain typical of most courses, however, gently undulates through copses of attractive umbrella pines.

Algarve features an arid countryside. This gives way to verdant oasis at each of the golf complexes thanks to large, state-funded water catchment. Holes  with water hazards are frequent, to be expected and enjoyed as a feature on Algarve courses.

So many new courses have been opened in the Algarve during the past few years. Golfers who have attended before will have the option enjoying new challenges and scenery.

A year round sport in the Algarve. The main season is from late autumn to late spring. Winters are mild. Golfers from all countries can enjoy warm, sunny days.
Rain does fall from time to time and nearly all of it during the main golfing season.
 

Many of the courses offer multiple green fee tickets at varying discounts for limited periods. During the warmer months, take advantage of the reduced green fees available at several courses for midday and/or evening teeing off times.

Visiting golfers will also find that they are welcome to play at a reasonable cost in most of the many local tournaments. It is well worth finding out about upcoming tournaments from the various clubs before or as soon as you arrive.

Although golf is easily the main sport played in the Algarve by visitors and residents alike, plenty of other sports activities can be enjoyed throughout the year. Other sports enjoyed in this area area tennis, squash, horse-riding, clay-pigeon shooting, micro-light flying. Water sports include  surfing & scuba-diving.

Not all the best or the most popular restaurants and bars frequented by summer visitors remain open throughout the October to April golf season, but there is always a good choice of eating and drinking establishments which do not close.
